Lexus is saying I need a new throttle booy assy

Sent to Lexus Experts August 7 2008 at 9:10 AM

Failed state inspection....1). Lexus is saying I need a new throttle body assy ($1300)...P0440 and p0505 codes (check engine light and VSC). I dont seem to be having any idle problems, gas mileage is ok, car is not sputtering. Changed the air filter and re-set the computer but now the messages are back. Any thoughts ...is there something short of complete replacement as an option?
2). Also saying I need "strut rods" (~$500)...how can I tell if there are bad strut rods? How many are there? Need bushings also at same time?   Thanks

P0440 is a evap system malfunction, this has nothing to do with the throttle body, it would be in the fuel tank/vapor pressure sensor/vaccum switching valve/or canister. Did you check to be sure the gas cap is on tight? Do you live in a northern state that uses road salt? I have seen salt/rust take out these VSV's.

P0505 is an idle system malfunction, be sure that the air intake tube to the throttle body is sealed/not leaking or damaged or such. THis points to a throttle body or throttle pedal issue, be sure that the throttle body is clean and not restricted, the dealer should have checked the pedal with the scan tool already to verify proper reading, I have replaced quite a few throttle bodies for this concern.

Struts, if they are leaking then they need to be replaced, new upper strut mounts are a very good idea while you are in there, be sure the front caster arms and lower ball joints have been inspected also, these love to wear out on this car. It will need to be aligned after this repair also.

they re testd the evap system and said no leaks (at this time) so that seems to be ok.   I am in Charlotte NC so no salt issues

I failed to mention that the write up references the idle motor clutch was found "out of spec". Why do you think I am not observing and functional problems from this T-body issue?

Im not clear on the strut rods....I need to get more info. I replaced the struts all the way around about 12-18 mos ago so it shouldn't be the struts (shocks).

Hi Jason, Lexus said 2 front "strut rods" (not struts) Part# 4867040011 and 4866040021.... again no symptoms but apparently tech found some play when car was off the ground...I am familiar with steering control arms and bushings and various ball joints but not strut rod. I wanted to look at it my self but Im not exactly sure which "rod" they are refering to....apparetntly it connects the strut to the suspension?

thanks for the clarification

PS....the AC shutdown problem we discussed before has not re-occurred for months so I pretty much gave up on trying to chase it further...watch, it'll kick in just when I mention it!
