This is a very common problem with the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. The IAC is responsible for maintaining the engine idle under all conditions. Typically the valve becomes gummed from age and will stick slightly open and cause the engine to idle low or stall. A gummed up valve can also cause a start and immediate stall, or a stall coming to a stop light. If you can keep the engine running by giving it gas, it further condemns the valve. The IAC is correctly tested through a factory level scan tool, and along with it's replacement, the throttle body should be cleaned. Below is how the IAC looks, it's mounted on the bottom of the intake throttle body. The approximate cost to replace at a reputable facility is around $500.
