My 2001 Lexus RX 300 sometimes stalls after you start it. If you give it a little gas it''ll stay running. It won''t do this for long. After a minute it runs normally.

Hi, welcome to JA.

This is a very common problem with the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. The IAC is responsible for maintaining the engine idle under all conditions. Typically the valve becomes gummed from age and will stick slightly open and cause the engine to idle low or stall. A gummed up valve can also cause a start and immediate stall, or a stall coming to a stop light. If you can keep the engine running by giving it gas, it further condemns the valve. The IAC is correctly tested through a factory level scan tool, and along with it's replacement, the throttle body should be cleaned. Below is how the IAC looks, it's mounted on the bottom of the intake throttle body. The approximate cost to replace at a reputable facility is around $500.

It has to be replaced...cleaning will work in 10% of the cases since the carbon gums up in areas inaccesable by throtle body cleaning spray. But for the amount of labor it takes to remove the valve, if the cleaning doesn't work...you would owe the shop twice the labor for the same job; unless you plan on removing the valve yourself and cleaning it - it's worth the try.
